Diamond Carat Guide

What Is Carat Weight?

Carat is the unit of measurement used to express the weight of a diamond. One carat equals 0.2 grams. While carat weight can influence a diamond’s appearance, it’s not the only factor in how large a diamond looks, cut, shape, and setting also play a big role.

Does Higher Carat Always Mean Bigger?

Not necessarily. A well-cut 0.90ct diamond can appear just as large — and often sparkle more than a poorly cut 1.00ct stone. Some diamond shapes (like oval and marquise) appear larger than others at the same carat weight.

Carat Weight and Price

Diamond pricing increases exponentially, not linearly, with carat weight. For example:

  • 0.90ct may cost significantly less than 1.00ct

  • “Magic weights” (0.50ct, 1.00ct, 1.50ct) often come with a pricing premium

💡 Our Tip: Consider just under a milestone weight (e.g. 0.95ct) to maximise value without noticeable size loss.
